Saturdays FA Carlsberg Vase Round

SATURDAY`S FA CARLSBERG VASE ROUND-UP....
06/02/2010

FA Carlsberg Vase holders Whitley Bay were held to a 1-1 draw by Combined Counties League side Chertsey Town in Surrey.

The skilltrainingltd Northern League side fell behind to Ollie Treacher’s opening goal after just 4 minutes of play, but were soon back in the tie, thanks to Richard Hodgson's strike 4 minutes later.

But despite that end-to-end opening to the match, neither side were able to break the ensuing deadlock in the remaining 82 minutes or extra-time, so a replay will be required to settle the tie.

Bay`s league rivals Shildon required extra-time to defeat Hereward Teamwear United Counties League Premier Division St Ives Town 3-1.

After a scoreless first half Sam Garvie broke the deadlock with a 58th minute opener for the Railwaymen.

Ozie Foster's 87th minute reply took the tie into overtime. But the reprieve was a temporary one for the Saints.

Garvie restored Shildon's advantage on 100 minutes with Martin Houlahan sealing the Durham outfit's quarter final place with 4 minutes to play.

Needham Market reached the Quarter Final stage for the third year in succession with a hard fought 2-0 victory over United Counties League Premier Division visitors Daventry Town.

Second half goals from Damien Hilton and Craig Parker sealed Needham’s passage to the last eight of the competition, in a tight encounter at Bloomfields.

In-form Needham, second in the Ridgeons Premier, were pushed all the way by Northamptonshire’s Daventry but eventually the Suffolk team’s extra quality in front of goal proved the difference between the sides.

In a typical frenetic cup tie opening to the match, neither outfit was able to dominate possession. And with the score still goalless at the halfway point, both sides knew they would have to make the most of any rare chances after the break.

Just 5 minutes after the restart, experienced striker Hilton found himself one-on-one with the visiting goalkeeper. The former Lowestoft Town and Wroxham player kept his cool to slot calmly in to the net, giving his side a crucial 1-0 advantage.

Daventry poured forward in search of an equaliser as the final whistle drew closer, and were caught on the counter-attack 5 minutes from time. Midfielder Parker beat the offside-trap to strike right-footed, in off the post, for his fifteenth goal of the season.

Needham lost on penalties to Chalfont St Peter at the Quarter Final stage last season, but will now hope to go one step further in this year’s competition.

Northern League side Norton & Stockton Ancients moved in to the last eight with an impressive 2-0 away victory overVodkat North West Counties Leaguers New Mills.

Sonny Andrews was the hero for the visitors, with his two late goals proving the difference between the sides.

Derbyshire side New Mills, third in the NWCL Premier Division, looked pre-match favourites for the tie against a Norton & Stockton side struggling in the Northern League.

But the north-east team produced one of the stand-out performances of the Fifth Round, thanks to Andrews’ double strike.

After an even first half of few opportunities, it was the visitors who looked more dangerous after the restart and when New Mills’ star performer Carlos Meakin was forced to withdraw injured midway through the second-half, Norton seized the initiative.

Andrews opened the scoring in the 77th minute to give his side a hard-earned lead, and the forward settled the game with another impressive finish just 2 minutes later.

East Midlands Counties League Gresley FC survived a late rally from United Counties Leaguers Long Buckby to win a thrilling tie by 4-3.

After falling behind to Dan Holman’s 10th minute opening goal, double strikes from Royce Turville and Rob Spencer established a 4-1 lead for Derybshire’s Gresley.

However, late goals from Dan Chilton and Jonathan Crockett set up a tense finale before Gresley eventually held on to earn a place in the last eight of the competition

Extra-time couldn’t separate Sussex County League side Whitehawk and Norther Leaguers Marske United, who drew 1-1 at East Brighton Park.

Danny Davis fired Hawks ahead three minutes before half time, converting a cross from Sam Crabb.

But the Northern League Division Two side were level within a minute when captain Mark Taylor headed home a corner.

Whitehawk had a penalty shout turned down in the second half when Wes Tate appeared to be pulled back.

At the other end Lloyd Anderson made three good saves in the closing stages of normal time before Davis saw his 35-yarder fumbled around the post by Marske keeper Brendan Ledgeway in the second minute of stoppage time.

The game went to extra-time and the best chance fell to Crabb 6 minutes from the end but his shot was smothered by Ledgeway.

Hawks finished with ten-men after Sam Fisk was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the closing stages. In total ten yellow cards were shown.

A replay will also be required to settle the tie between Toolstation Western League side Willand Rovers and Leicestershire outfit Barwell, who played out a 2-2 draw.

The Aspire Midland Combination visitors took a 20th minute lead from a Kevin Charley penalty.

James Ansell equalised just before half time and then Jamie Towers restored Barwell`s lead with 15 minutes to go.

But less than 3 minutes later David Steele, who has played in a Vase Final with Tiverton Town, levelled.

In the day’s Fourth Round replay, Ridgeons League Wroxham triumphed 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out against KoolSport Northern Counties East Leaguers Armthorpe Welfare, after the scoreline had remained 1-1 after extra-time.

The sides were deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes and 30 minutes extra-time. But Wroxham were much cooler in the shoot out winning 3-0.

Wroxham keeper Scott Howie immediately put Welfare under pressure by saving the first penalty which was followed by two shots over the bar from Armthorpe while Wroxham sharp shooters Shaun Howes, Martin McNeil and Owen Paynter all tucked their shots away.

Earlier Wroxham had enjoyed a bit of good luck as the visitors despite being reduced to ten-men hit the bar and had one shot go the wrong side of the post after taking a deflection to deceive Howie.

During the opening 90 minutes Wroxham scored first inside 5 minutes when McNeil's header hit the net but they were pegged back just before the break when after a claim for a penalty at one end following a foul on Gavin Lemmon was dismissed by the Yorkshire side they were immediately awarded a disputed one themselves at the other end.

Wroxham never got into their stride as they had done in the previous game and no further goals resulted from open play.

The shoot-out followed and fortunately turned out right for the Yachtsmen who now progress to the Fifth Round to meet Molten Spartan South Midlands side Royston Town next Saturday.
