Wroxham 1,
Walsham-le-Willows 1

Ridgeons League Premier Division
Saturday 10th October 2009

Referee : David Bryan (Stamford)

Attendance : 140

Wroxham gained two early corners which came to nothing against a Walsham-le-Willows side who included ex-Yachtsmen Duncan McAnally and Steve Harley in their line-up.

The visitors Paul Musgrove was booked for arguing with the referee on 6 minutes and Wroxham’s Shaun Howes also went in the officials notebook on 12 mins for a clumsy foul on Harley.

Good play by Matt Daniels brought another corner for the home side as they pressed forward but the cross was well taken by McAnally. Wroxham were doing most of the attacking but came up against a solid backline marshalled by the Walsham skipper, Trevor Newman.

The visitors were not causing Howie any problems until the 30th minute when a bit of Harley magic saw him turn past Shaun Howes and his right foot shot from 12 yards thundered against the underside of the bar with Howie unable to get near it but fortunately for Wroxham the ball remained in play before eventually being cleared.

This near miss seemed to galvanise the visitors and Lee Sim got in a good position to get in a shot which was narrowly wide after Harley again mesmerised his former colleagues.

Good work by Spriggs set up Owen Paynter who from the edge of the box hit a terrific shot which Newman did well to divert.

The game was end to end now and Paul Cook got in a looping header which was just over from a Spriggs cross after the Wroxham winger switched to the left.

Then a good ball in from Gavin Pauling reached Paynter whose toe-poke almost deceived McAnally but he got enough on the shot to recover as the ball seemed destined to cross the line.

Wroxham finished the half stronger as first Cook and then Paynter both had chances but the former Wroxham keeper denied them both to keep the score deadlocked at half-time.

Walsham came out more determined after the break and Sims 25 yarder was just past the post.

For Wroxham, Shaun Howes got into a good position down the left and his cross only needed a touch but went beyond everyone.

Ex-Bury player James Tatham fed Harley whose shot across goal was only a yard wide.

Paynter and Spriggs combined for the winger to set-up Danny White who scuffed his shot with only McAnally to beat.

Wroxham decided to change things with Gary Gilmore replacing Daniels and for a while the Yachtsmen were installed in the visitors half without creating any clear chances.

Walsham were playing some neat football from the back and almost scored when Tatham hit the upright.

Wroxham had the best chance of the game in the 65th minute when Danny White was played through and he hit what seemed a certain goal only for McAnally to keep his side in the game with a brilliant full length dive to his right.

Wroxham then replaced Paynter with Ollie King as they pressed forward and in the 72nd minute they received their reward when Spriggs cross from the right was met perfectly by Danny White to head past McAnally.

The home side looked to consolidate on this with another good four man move which saw a 25 yarder from Spriggs just clear the bar.. Cook’s header from Sprigg’s corner was blocked on the line and Gareth Simpson also went close.

The Yachtsmen were then caught with a sucker goal in the 88th minute as Gavin Pauling brought down Tatham with no apparent danger and Andrew Cusack converted the spot kick sending Howie the wrong way to give the visitors a share of the spoils.

Full report to follow.
