Ridgeons League Premier Division
Saturday 7th April 2007

Referee : Neil Hair (Peterborough)

Attendance : 189

In front of a good sized crowd the Yachtsmen looked unsure of themselves during the early action and they almost conceded an own goal when Woodcock allowed a backpass to roll under his foot but the keeper just managed to recover in time to hack the ball clear from the goal line.

Harwich broke at pace again soon after and Underwood threatened, but Carus got back well to make a good covering tackle and from the resultant corner Brannon's ball into the box picked out Underwood who would have been disappointed not to have hit the target with his header..

Next it was Wroxham's turn to attack as a long ball forward found Gilman but the ball bobbled just as he was about to let fly and his effort was well off target. The Yachtsmen were coming into the game more with Gilmore looking particularly lively and when he was found by Gilman he carried the ball across the edge of the area before shooting wide.

An error by Howes provided Harwich with another shooting opportunity as Underwood let fly, but his shot went wide of Woodcock's right hand upright. At the other end Thompson combined with Howes before shooting but his effort was bravely charged down by Race. The home side were now on top, but Harwich were defending well and chances were few and far between. A lovely Wroxham move saw Howlett find Thompson who in turn picked out Gilman who was chopped down by Springett but the referee looked to play an advantage but nothing came of it in what proved to be the last significant action of the half.Wroxham won a number of corners early in the second half, one of which led to a scramble in the area before the ball was eventually cleared. Good work by Gilman then allowed him to find Thompson who fed the ball to White and his shot was well saved by Wass. The Yachtsmen made a change with Key coming on for Howlett as the home side continued to press but without a cutting edge.

A reckless challenge by Hewitt left Gilman in a heap on the ground but the referee elected to keep his cards in his pocket as Wroxham's pressure began to mount on the Essex side, although Harwich had the next chance of the game as Underwood cut the ball back to Thorne and Woodcock had to make a good save to preserve the status quo.

Wroxham were then forced to make another chance with Miller replacing the injured Challen but still the home side pressed forward and Gilman decided to try his luck from distance but Wass was untroubled. Key surged into the box but his cross was well cleared by Wass and when Gilmore went for the loose ball he was left prone on the ground by a high challenge by Race that brought a furious reaction from the Wroxham fans and players in the vicinity. Play was held up for several minutes as Gilmore received lengthy treatment for what was obviously a serious injury before play could eventually resume with Race fortunate to escape with just a caution.

Despite the disruption Wroxham were soon on the attack again as they desperately searched for a winner and a neat one-two between Howes and Key allowed the former to cross and Wass just got his finger tips to the ball. Despite being under a lot of pressure Harwich worried the home fans as Towse found Race but he shot wide then Brannon did likewise.

With the game deep into the stoppage time caused by Gilmore's injury Wroxham netted a late late winner as Ben Thompson received the ball on the edge of the area and he turned before shooting and despite not appearing to catch the ball cleanly the effort still had enough pace on it to beat Wass and end up in the bottom corner of the goal to earn the Yachtsmen another vital three points.

FT : Wroxham 1, Harwich & Parkeston 0

Wroxhamfc.com man of the match - Josh Carus

A generally scrappy affair where a hardworking and well organised Harwich outfit made the title chasing Yachtsmen work all the work to earn their win which was deserved on the balance of play. Few standout performances for the home side but Josh Carus enjoyed a good afternoon in the heart of the defence, so he gets the award.
