Wroxham 3,
Stanway Rovers 1

Ridgeons League Premier Division
Saturday 2nd December 2006

Referee : Graham Bielby (King's Lynn)

Attendance : 137

On a very soft playing surface Stanway, on their first visit to Trafford Park, began the game kicking into a low sun as the game got off to an even opening with the majority of the action taking place in the middle third of the pitch.

However the Yachtsmen began to get on top and they took the lead with a well worked opener after 12 minutes. Gilmore did very well on the left and he then played the ball into the feet of Ben Thompson whose lovely first touch teed him up to place the ball home into the bottom corner with his second. More good work by Gilmore provided Thompson with another opening just moments later as he broke away from Curtis, but Emmerson came out well to save with his feet and from the resultant corner Lemmon headed over.

Stanway were looking to get the ball forward early, with North winning plenty of headers, but Woodcock in the home goal was seeing little of the ball. A corner by Key caused problems in the Stanway defence before Thompson's shot was blocked. The visitors then enjoyed a better spell before the Yachtsmen found themselves down to 10 men for several minutes as Pauling required lengthy treatment to a gash in his calf.

Stanway almost made their man advantage count as a slip by Challen provided Turner with a chance, but he pulled his shot wide of the far post. No sooner had Pauling rejoined the action than play was held up again as a nasty clash of heads left both Gilmore and Noone requiring treatment with the Stanway man looking particularly groggy as he came to the sideline. On the stroke of the interval the home side doubled their lead as a lovely ball through the middle by Gilmore to White saw him dodge past the keeper but as the midfield man looked certain to score the keeper poked the ball away from him but it fell straight to Ben Thompson who rolled it home from close range.Stanway had a chance to get a goal back early in the second half as Turner's long ball sent Chatters away but Pauling got back to make an excellently timed covering tackle. As in the first half a lot of the action was taking place in the centre of the pitch with both keepers enjoying fairly quiet afternoons.

Wroxham manager Damian Hilton brought himself on up front in place of Key as his side began to gain the upper hand and a good ball by White was won by Carus and he set-up a half chance for Thompson but he was unable to keep his volleyed effort down. That proved to be Thompson's last involvement as he limped off to be replaced by King.

Wroxham were looking comfortable but an error by Woodcock provided Stanway with a lifeline as he spilled Curtis's ball into the box and it fell to the feet of Ray Turner who smashed it home. The goal lifted the visitors as they began to put Wroxham under pressure but the Wroxham defence stood firm.

At the other end Pauling slipped a nice pass through the heart of the Stanway defence and White challenged Emmerson for the ball with the referee awarding a seemingly soft free kick in favour of the keeper. A clash on the left touchline between Hilton and Townes saw Wroxham's manager cautioned and the two were soon involved again as Hilton picked up the ball and broke down the right before delivering a great ball out to Gary Gilmore who calmly rounded Emmerson before rolling the ball home to effectively secure the three points for his side.

Stanway kept going though and were very unlucky not to score when Cutchey's shot crashed against the bar and the follow up shot was blocked for a corner that was claimed by Woodcock. He quickly threw the ball to Gilmore who played the ball into the path of Lemmon's excellent run and he carried the ball on before letting fly and his effort beat Emmerson but hit the post. As the ball came to Gilmore his cross was deflected for a corner that Howlett took but the ball was cleared.

Wroxhamfc.com man of the match - Gary Gilmore

This was a scrappy match with Wroxham never hitting any great heights, but they generally looked comfortable throughout and might have won more easily had they taken their early chances, but credit to Stanway who never gave up. The man of the match award goes to Gary Gilmore who was certainly the best player for his side on the afternoon and capped his display with a well taken goal.
